Malocclusion and TMJ disorders in teenagers from private and public schools in Mexico City.

Objective: To identify, among Mexican teenagers from public and private schools, the frequency, severity of malocclusion and orthodontic treatment needs, and their possible association with temporomandibular joint disorders. Material and Methods: Fifteen-year-old students were recruited from public and private schools. Clinical findings were registered as follows: oral hygiene status with the Oral Hygiene Index-Simplified, malocclusion using the Dental Aesthetic Index (DAI), and TMJ disorders following WHO criteria. The first published account of a neurosurgical intervention performed on the North American continent is described. The operation took place in Mexico City in 1561. The neurosurgical intervention was performed by a Spanish surgeon, Pedro Arias de Benavides, on a 13-year-old boy who had sustained head trauma that caused an open depressed cranial fracture and exposed the cerebrum. A description of this case was first published in Valladolid, Spain, 6 years after the event, in a book entitled Secretos de Chirurgia ("Secrets of Surgery").

Study on frequency of dental developmental alterations in a MEXICAN school-based population

Background The aim of this study was to know the distribution of dental developmental alterations in the population requesting stomatological attention at the Admission and Diagnosis Clinic of our institution in Mexico City. Material and Methods We reviewed the archives and selected those files with developmental dental alterations. Analyzed data were diagnoses, age, gender, location and number of involved teeth. Results Of the 3.522 patients reviewed, 179 (5.1%) harbored 394 developmental dental alterations. Of them, 45.2% were males and 54.8% were females with a mean age of 16.7 years. La atenuación de los marcadores de control de contacto en PRESEEA: un estudio comparativo entre España y México

En el presente trabajo se estudia el valor atenuante de los marcadores conversacionales de control de contacto en el corpus de entrevistas PRESEEA en dos ciudades de España (Valencia y Madrid) y dos de México (Monterrey y México D. F.). A partir de la inclusión de las intervenciones tanto del entrevistador como del entrevistado, se observan una serie de tendencias que resultan comunes en estas dos variedades geográficas. Los resultados muestran que el entrevistado atenúa para proteger su imagen, mientras que el entrevistador utiliza esta estrategia pragmática como medio para conseguir información de su interlocutor. Needles made of human bones from Xochimilco

Abstract This paper presents the study of needles made of long human bones (Homo sapiens) from the region of Xochimilco, now a quarter in Mexico City, which in pre-Hispanic times was one of the cities conquered by the Aztec empire. Dental developmental alterations in patients with dilacerated teeth.

Background The aim of this study was to record and analyze all DDAs associated to dilacerated teeth in patients attending the clinics of the Postgraduate Division, Facultad de Odontología, UNAM in Mexico City. Material and Methods Orthopantomograms from all patients seeking for stomatological attention in our institution were reviewed and those cases of dilaceration were separated. Age, gender, diagnosis, location, involved teeth and associated DDAs were recorded and analyzed. Results From 6,340 patients, 99 (1.6%) harbored 125 dilacerated teeth.
